Welcome to the 876 Java Blog
At 876 Java, we're here to talk coffee. While we hope to entertain, our mission is simple: to share meaningful, relevant information that helps you enjoy your favorite beverage to the fullest.
876 Java is an import/export company proudly based in Jamaica. We specialize in Jamaica Blue Mountain Specialty Coffee-one of the world’s most sought—after specialty coffees—along with other high-quality Jamaican coffee varieties. If you're unfamiliar with what makes a coffee "specialty" or what gives Jamaica Blue Mountain its legendary status, let’s start from the beginning.
A Brief History of Jamaican Coffee
Coffee has been cultivated in Jamaica since 1728, when Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes brought the first Arabica plants from Martinique. Within a decade, Jamaican coffee was already being exported to global markets.
However, the name "Jamaica Blue Mountain"—with all the prestige and standards it carries-emerged much later. Here’s a quick timeline of how the brand developed:
- 1944–1945: In the post–World War II era, Jamaican authorities established the Central Coffee Clearing House to manage and classify different grades of coffee for export
- Early 1950s: The Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica (CIB) was founded to oversee cultivation, grading, and export—and to enforce the Blue Mountain appellation
- Coffee Industry Regulation Act: This law legally defined the specific geographical areas and elevations where coffee must be grown to earn the title "Jamaica Blue Mountain"
It’s a common misconception that all coffee grown in Jamaica qualifies as "Blue Mountain." In truth, only beans grown in select parishes—at specific elevations—within the Blue Mountain range are eligible for this prestigious title.
So, while coffee has been grown and exported from Jamaica for nearly 300 years, the certified Blue Mountain Coffee brand has been recognized and marketed globally for roughly 70–80 years, beginning in the mid-20th century.
What Makes Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee So Special?
At the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Expo 2025 in Houston, Texas, USA, we had the pleasure of chatting with Joe—an industry expert from Joe’s Organic Syrup. Joe described Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee this way:
"It’s the perfect mixture—soil composition, climate, elevation, bean variety, phosphorus levels, and natural mineral content. Everything aligns to produce a coffee bean that’s as close to perfect as it gets."
This harmony of nature and tradition gives Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee its rich aroma, low acidity, and smooth, balanced flavor.
